My readers and friends,
I have decided, after much consideration, to call off my NaNoWriMo attempt this year. The reasons are multiple, but being too busy with schoolwork or simply not feeling the story do NOT rank among them, I can assure you.
The problem is far simpler. It is impossible to edit a movie and write a story at the same time. One will naturally preclude the other. And seeing as I have only completed final editing on one out of three episodes for a December slated release, I'm in a pickle.
To misquote,
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve Film and novel."
Har har.
But seriously, I haven't been able to get much of anything done on either because I haven't the time or energy to work on both and be a full-time architecture student and still get sleep. :) So I must choose.
And as the film has a considerably higher number of people waiting expectantly on its December release (as opposed to my one for the novel), it takes precedence.
So, my November will be novelless, but who knows? I might do the last three-quarters in December! Or January... Or maybe never. But I won't stop writing, that's for certain.
As soon as Ironwing shows in theaters near you (not really :P), I'll switching from iMovie back to Pages and hitting the keyboard a lot harder.
Until next we meet (or I guilt myself in posting something here),
Farjag
Brother,
ReplyDeleteStephan, you have my deepest respect and admiration. I am also deeply sorry that you will not be able to continue writing your novel: it saddens me to know that I am a part in your inability to put ink on scroll. But as I read your post, I thought of a verse that has been very encouraging to me these past two weeks specifically, and I hope it is a timely encouragement to you, too:
For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Eccl. 4: 10-12
In all things, I know you are strive to bring glory to Christ and his Kingdom, and as your brother in Christ, I am beside you to the end. In all things, great and small, I am with you, brother! Now get some rest and follow up with some A's! :)
Ah, sad times there. Nevertheless, prioritisation for the sake of your health and sanity is probably the way to go. Besides, as you said, you can always come back to the story later, when your time permits.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your movie, too! I still boggle at the thought of all the work and effort that must go into that. You're a busy man - and a very impressive one!
I didn't know you were making a movie! Now I am all curious and feeling nosey. What is it about? Will it be put up on Youtube or shown to only a certain few? Did you film it yourself?
ReplyDeleteIndependent movie makers fascinate me. There is one fellow in the town I live in who does them and he has released two which I very much enjoy.
I can understand about NaNo. Sometimes, we must decide which is more important at the moment. Also, getting sleep somewhere in the middle of all that, it kind of helps.
I am a bit disappointed and hope you do finish the book someday, because I would love to read it, but I also understand. I almost had to make the same choice myself. There is only so much the brain can take.
