Open your window.
What do you hear?
The twittering of birds on a quiet street?
The hubbub of traffic at a busy intersection?
The sawing of cicadas in the woods?
The crash of surf on the shore?
The silence of snow falling from the sky?
The moaning of the wind as it rushes past?
The murmur of folk passing on the sidewalk?
The hum of distant machinery?
I'll tell you what I hear:
All of them.
Running around inside my head like ghosts of a memory.
The sounds of all the places I've been, or seen, or heard.
And there's one more sound.
It's the Still, Small Voice of the Great Musician, spinning His melodies and cacophonies of sound throughout my existence.
It connects every sound together, weaving them into the single, unified sound that is Earth. All of Creation is woven together into this single song.
Many parts are dark and broken, shadows of what they were meant to be. Some parts have altogether dropped out of the orchestra. Some parts have tried to place themselves above the others.
But the orchestra remains, still sounding the Creator's praise.
Wow. That was really beautiful. God's music is truly everywhere, and I often forget to stop and listen. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteMost Welcome!
DeleteThis was fantastic. I can completely relate to it all––the sounds, the music, and the instruments. It's amazing to think of how we are all guided by the same Conductor.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this. And I'm not just saying that––I don't throw my words around.
And about the violin vs viola...I can truly say that because I was originally a violinist. But I love the viola. How it is rich and mellow––as deep as a cello but more singing and vibrant like a violin. Its tone is melancholy too, which I adore. Yeah, I'm sort of a viola fanatic.
If you want to hear a really wonderful viola concerto, check out the Cecil Forsyth Viola Concerto in G minor played by Lawrence Power. The first movement is my favorite. I'm currently playing it––just had rehearsal this morning, actually. I think this concerto really displays the beauty of the viola.
Sorry, I started talking about viola and that could go on forever. Anyway, you should check the Forsyth out, that is, if you like romantic era music.
I'll do that!
DeleteSudden urge to stick my head out of the window and listen and think deep thoughts initated.
ReplyDeleteCurse you, Farjag! ;)
That's the point, isn't it? :P Your curse be on your own head :)
Delete'The moaning of the wind as it rushes past?'
ReplyDeleteIf you replace moaning with roaring, grinding, screaming, or earth-shattering hurricane force, it matches my house perfectly, :)
Oh, I completely understand! Add to that the splatter of rain driven against the windows, perhaps the crack of rolling thunder, maybe the occasional tearing of a branch from a tree... and ta-da! Symphony time! :)
